Alicja Habisiak-Matczak was born in Piotrków Trybunalski in 1978. In 1997-2002 she studied at the Faculty of Graphic Arts and Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in ŁódĽ. In 2002 she obtained her diploma with honours from the Intaglio Techniques Studio run by Prof. Krzysztof Wawrzyniak. Since 2004, she has been employed at her alma mater, since 2016 as a professor of the academy and the Head of the Intaglio Techniques Studio.

In 2003, she received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Italian government and completed a six-month graphic arts internship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Urbino and the KAUS International Graphic Arts Centre in Urbino. She received her Doctor of Fine Arts degree in 2009 and her postdoctoral degree (habilitation) in 2015.

She conducts innovative research on experimental intaglio techniques within the framework of grants from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, such as salt aquatint, ferrotint, non-toxic etching techniques, electrolytic etching and the use of monotypes in intaglio printing.

In 2007, she was a laureate of the “Young Poland” Scholarship Programme of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and in 2013 she was awarded a scholarship from the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw. She is the author of 33 solo exhibitions in Poland (ŁódĽ, Warsaw, Iława, Łomża), Argentina (Buenos Aires), China (Hong Kong), the Netherlands (Wageningen), Canada (Vernon, Edmonton), Luxembourg, Italy (Urbino, Rome, Fano, Vercelli). She has participated in more than 230 national and international exhibitions of printmaking and drawing. In 2020 she received the honorary statuette ‘ŁÓDZKIE EUREKA’ awarded by the Council for Higher Education and Science at the Mayor of the City of ŁódĽ. She participates in international printmaking conferences such as, e. g., IMPACT ‘10 (Santander, 2018) and IMPACT 11 (Hong Kong, 2021), IMPACT 12 (Bristol 2022).

Between 2013 and 2020, together with Giuliano Santini, she was the initiator and coordinator of the International Summer Courses - Printmaking and Textile Art (PATA).

She is the supervisor of the Scientific Students Association “Eksperymentarium” of the Intaglio Techniques Studio and the Lithographic Techniques Studio (together with Tomasz Matczak, DA), and she also runs the Students’ Graphics Gallery “Pomiędzy”.

She is the organiser of the “Flash Drawing Tour” Symposia at KAUS in Urbino.
